DAN stands for Divers Alert Network, or as it is often called the "diver's safety net" was founded in 1980 by a group of scientists and university professors in Italy and the USA. The mission of DAN is to operate and maintain a global network of 24hr global alarm centers, guaranteeing the necessary assistance is always available to any diver anywhere. DAN also runs research projects in a variety of dive related subjects including PFO and its effect on divers. DAN is a nonprofit member organisation with the benefit to members that their money is used to further the knowledge of divings effect on human physiology and the reassurance of its member insurance coverage.
